DON

What can I say? How do I remember him? This complicated, talented, occasional con man, but always generous and kind to those he loved. A hard worker, an artist who never reached his full potential. Stubborn. Frustrated. A fighter for his beliefs. A gentle soul who masked his delicate core with comedy.
I remember him especially when we were both young.
He was the one who loved animals. When we lived in the country, he adored his pet rabbits. When we lived in the city, he brought home birds with broken wings and nursed them back to health. Painstakingly fed them with an eyedropper. As a Boy Scout he won a city-wide (Ottawa, Ontario) honour for his environmental/wildlife passions. I remember our family gathering around the television watching him receive this award from a long-forgotten civic official. I was so proud of him…my annoying pesky brother being so honoured. Like maybe he wasn’t such a bad guy, after all.
Picture
He was a fighter for the oppressed or downtrodden. But that’s probably because he was small for his age while growing up so he knew what it was like to be bullied. I never paid much attention to him when he was bullied. Because, after all, weren’t boys fighting all the time?
He was an entrepreneur. He started businesses at different times: like a printing press and a pet store. Worked hard and then for one reason or another, abandoned them. Or was forced to close when the big box conglomerates moved into town. I was too busy living my own life to find out.
Picture
When he moved his family out to British Columbia from Ontario, he stopped in to see us. At that time, we were living on the shores of Lake Huron. He parked his trailer in one of Canada’s nearby provincial parks and invited us (a family with three boys) to share a campfire meal of freshly caught trout. Our sons still remember that outing with Uncle Don to this day.
He was anti-government. And yet, while living in BC he headed the local arm of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business. Even more astounding, because of his success in that position, he was invited to the then-Prime Minister’s office in Ottawa where he, and others like him, shook hands, had photos taken, and enjoyed a day of recognition with the PM. We all got a chuckle out of that.
He, his wife and three children settled into B.C.  For a few years, Don and Claire relocated to Belize. Then, I think, health issues became an issue.
Picture
When my husband and I visit one of our sons in Smithers, B.C., we always stop to see Don and Claire in the Oliver/Osoyoos area. Over the years, Don’s health declined. He was against the medical system (of course!) so ignored his wife’s urgings to seek help from a doctor. Gradually his overall health deteriorated. It was painful to see. Hard for his family. Harder still for him.
I remember Don for his generosity as much as for his temper. When he first moved out west, the Ontario wing of his family received extravagant gifts, like Cowichan sweaters. Every year, when the cherries hung heavy, we each received boxes of ripe organic BC cherries.
This man was a dichotomy. He is also my bro…my bro. My bro.
Don, may you rest in peace. Love you forever.

Thank you for honouring our beloved brother in such a beautiful tribute. Yes, Don certainly left a legacy of paradoxes, and I loved him dearly.

Thanks, Beth. He was an original with a good heart, Beth. Sometimes life just didn't treat him fairly.

A very nice tribute to my older brother. With our 9 years age difference, I never really knew Don. Thanks for sharing

Thanks, Ross. Do we ever really know who we really are? Don is indeed a complex man.

Hi Heather,

I learned some things I did not know about our brother Don, such as his love for rabbits and mending birds with broken wings; which likely contributed to his winning the competition as a Boy Scout for his aforementioned love of animals.

I understand that he was also quite a good cook in the kitchen, and I know he loved the country and was not a fan of the city.

I believe Don had not one, but two pet stores, one in Oliver and the other in Coquitlam. In between he was a travelling salesmen for the very products he knew would be profitable, and hence would lend his experience to the owners of other pet stores while making sales.

I was fortunate to travel with him for three weeks in 1986 right after our father died. His personality lit the room up like a star, and his sense of humour was very contagious. That journey was amongst my fondest memories as we travelled Vancouver and the Island.

I believe Don was also into natural health remedies in Belize, but ran into the obstacle of powerful entities preventing him from making a business out of it.

Heather, you and Norm are the template for travelling in this family, and many in the clan followed your lead, so Don living in Central America with his wife was likely a life long dream fulfilled..

Additionally, Don introduced me to African Cichlids while living in Stittsville, a hobby that still thrives in my basement to this day. We know he loved dogs but I can also tell you he loved fish.

Don is a wonderful man, and I love him. It's a loss to our family, but the laughter, fun times and the experience of just being around him will never be forgotten,.

Rest in peace Don. Until we meet again.

Scott

PS Pass the potato chips Don :)

Everything you write is true, Scott. You are filling in the blanks that I had to leave out. He is/was a character, larger than life. And full of life!

So sad to hear! I had no idea he passed away, a man I heard of during my lifetime but have never met. Actually, that’s not true. i have a picture of all of us visiting Ottawa in the 1950s when I was 5. We were sitting on the back porch steps.
Don sounds like he was a very interesting man.

Just wanted to pass along my condolences on the loss of Don. Wish I could have known him. It would have been nice to have spent some time at Deerhurst together.

Wise words, Sean! So happy we connected at Deerhurst. And as I mentioned to Janet, sometimes we don't appreciate our kin because life gets in the way. So pleased you and Pauline made it to Deerhurst..
