    In a small southwestern Ontario town, Mary-Jane, 17, is raped by her minister.  From that crude assault, MJ bears a daughter who is quickly whisked away and adopted at birth.  In her postpartum despair, MJ is taken in by the calculating Tommy, a graduate psychologist and carpenter by trade.  He seeks to control MJ through abuse and fear.  As MJ matures, she finds a job in the town library and through self-education determines to quietly leave the violent Tommy.  Now 40, she teams with Nelson, a local businessman looking for adventure who offers to drive her to Mérida, Yucátan, Mexico.  Along the way MJ begins a romantic affair with Roberto, a Mexican federal policia.
     Meanwhile, when the furious Tommy discovers MJ has deserted him, he immediately vows to find and punish his woman, and to force her back home.  Confident he knows her destination, Tommy coerces his gay cousin, Copley, to fly to Mexico with him to achieve his dark goal.
