She soon learns the harmful algae, which taint the water with a reddish tinge, are toxic to fish---hundreds of dead, smelling, decaying fish lie along the beaches---and can affect the human respiratory system.
Our runaway lady arrived safely only yesterday with her co-conspirator and protector, Nelson, in Brownsville, the border town across from Matamoros Mexico. They are on their way to the Yucatán Peninsula where MJ seeks a new life as far away as possible from Tommy, her stalking tormentor. She suspects Tommy is following her: he leaves ominous messages on Nelson’s cell phone to frighten her.
Before leaving the U.S. and head into Mexico, MJ and Nelson decide to relax (as much as possible considering Tommy’s disturbing messages) in this tourist paradise. Little do they know South Padre, not far from Brownsville, is under a Red Tide alert from the Texas Department of State Health Services.
South Padre is usually a fun place even though MJ can’t get into a fun mode mentally.
In her many moments of depression, MJ thinks about her out-of-wedlock daughter whom she gave up shortly after birth to adoptive parents. A young girl of 17 at that point in her life, she knows she was easily manipulated and forced into making a decision she constantly regrets. Now 40, she pines for her long lost daughter she calls Heidi, seldom finding inner peace when she thinks about her.
Meanwhile all Nelson thinks about is getting into MJ’s bed.
